Velez-Malaga slashes public transport fares with new 'Green Card' discounts

Public transport fares in Velez-Malaga have dropped significantly after the town joined the Malaga Metropolitan Transport Consortium last year. The new 'Green Card' system now offers cheaper travel, with discounts of up to €1.55 per journey depending on distance. Around 33,000 local residents are set to benefit from the reduced costs. Velez-Malaga officially became part of the consortium in May 2023. Since then, fares between the town and Malaga city have fallen to 95 cents per trip. Young people under 30 pay even less—just 76 cents for the same route.

The 'Green Card' itself costs between €1.50 and €2.00 to activate. Users can top it up in €5, €10, €20, or €30 increments at 12 sales points across Velez-Malaga. The system also rewards switching between buses and trains within set time limits, charging only 39 cents extra. Fares are calculated by 'jumps' between zones. For example, a trip to Rincon de la Victoria now costs 71 cents, or 57 cents for youth card holders. Regular commuters could save over €1,500 annually, while younger residents might save up to €1,600.

The new pricing structure cuts travel expenses for thousands in the area. With the 'Green Card' widely available, residents now have more affordable options for daily commutes. The changes follow Velez-Malaga’s integration into the wider transport network last year.
