Volkswagen's SDV platform aces endurance tests amid financial struggles
Volkswagen has made progress on its next-generation electric vehicle platform, known as the SDV. The system has now completed tough endurance tests and is set to underpin future models in Western markets. Meanwhile, the company faces financial challenges as its share price drops and exports to China decline sharply. The SDV platform, or zonal vehicle architecture, has proven its reliability in controlling key functions like all-wheel drive and traction control. It also simplifies wiring and allows for wireless software updates. This technology will form the core of Volkswagen's upcoming electric vehicles, helping the brand stay competitive in Europe and North America.
Volkswagen is also testing new concepts, such as the steering-wheel-free Gen.Urban vehicle, in real city conditions in Wolfsburg. The trial aims to assess how autonomous driving could work in urban areas.
To cut costs and improve efficiency, the company is pushing for more local production in major markets. Employees will receive a one-time bonus of €1,250 in May, a move designed to keep morale steady during financial strain.
In addition, Volkswagen has expanded its software partnerships. Winter testing with Rivian has gone smoothly, involving three models to increase acceptance of Rivian's technology. This follows a similar collaboration with XPeng in China, though no new US EV models have been announced yet.
Elsewhere, Škoda is preparing to launch the Epiq, a compact electric SUV, in autumn 2026. Volkswagen's share price has fallen by nearly 19% this year, closing at €86.04 on Friday. German auto exports to China have also dropped to €13.6 billion, less than half their value in 2022. Despite these setbacks, the company continues to develop new technology and strengthen its software partnerships to secure its future in electric mobility.
