Winter road grit now threatens windshields with costly cracks
The ÖAMTC has issued a warning to drivers about the risks of windshield damage from loose road grit after winter. Even small chips can quickly turn into larger cracks, leading to costly repairs or safety hazards on the road.
Moisture and temperature changes often cause minor chips to spread into full cracks. If left untreated, these cracks can worsen rapidly, making repairs difficult or even impossible—especially if the damage is near the edge of the glass.
A temporary chip seal can help prevent further harm until a professional repair is arranged. Drivers can use specialized windshield repair patches as an immediate solution. However, scheduling an expert appointment should follow without delay. The ÖAMTC also highlights that chips in the driver's line of sight can impair visibility. This may result in a failed vehicle inspection. Additionally, cracks in headlights or turn signals are considered serious defects under Austrian traffic law (§57a) and must be replaced immediately.
Acting quickly on windshield damage can save drivers from higher repair costs and safety risks. Temporary fixes help, but professional assessment remains essential. Ignoring small chips could lead to legal issues or dangerous driving conditions.
