World's Longest Railway Tunnel Carves Through the Alps
Construction is progressing on the world’s longest railway tunnel beneath the Brenner Pass in the Alps. The massive project will connect Austria and Italy as part of the trans-European rail corridor. The tunnel will stretch 64 kilometers through the mountains. Powerful tunneling machines, each packing 6,000 horsepower, are cutting through solid rock. Some of these machines tower nearly 20 meters high and extend hundreds of meters long.
Workers from 11 European countries are contributing to the build. Leading companies across the continent are also involved in the construction effort. Sebastian Reimann, the project director, called it a shared achievement, stating, 'Europe can take pride in what is being built here. This is a shared endeavor for all Europeans.' Once completed, the tunnel will form a key link between Austria and Italy. It will also strengthen the wider trans-European rail network. The project continues to advance with machinery, expertise, and collaboration from across the continent.
