Huayamilpas Park's final rehabilitation phase begins with duck rescue

Huayamilpas Ecological Park has entered the final phase of its rehabilitation project. Last week, a joint team of federal and local agencies rescued 17 ducks from the park’s lake as part of the restoration efforts. The initiative, backed by local residents, aims to revive the lake and surrounding areas after months of planning. Mayor Giovani Gutiérrez officially launched the third and final stage of the park’s rehabilitation on Monday. The Coyoacán borough government, alongside federal and Mexico City authorities, is leading the work to restore the lake and its ecosystem.

A multidisciplinary team—comprising environmentalists, biologists, technicians, and trained personnel—has been assembled for the task. Their first action involved rescuing the ducks, which were carefully examined, assessed, and transported to a shelter for veterinary care. Each bird received an identification record to ensure proper monitoring. The rescue operation included contributions from Semarnat, PAOT, Segiagua, and the Mexico City Police’s Animal Surveillance Brigade. These agencies worked together to relocate the ducks safely before deeper restoration work begins on the lake.

The final phase of the park’s rehabilitation is now underway, with the lake’s recovery as the central focus. The rescued ducks remain under temporary care while the restoration team continues its work. Authorities have confirmed that the project will proceed in close coordination with local residents and experts.
